Ranabaali Movie (2026): Review, Story, Cast, Runtime and OTT Update

Ranabaali is a Telugu period action drama that opened worldwide on 16 October 2026, a month after its earlier 11 September date. Directed by Rahul Sankrityan and produced by Mythri Movie Makers, it stars Vijay Deverakonda as the rebel warrior Ranabaali and Rashmika Mandanna as his wife Jayamma. Hollywood actor Arnold Vosloo, best known as Imhotep in The Mummy, plays the British villain.

It’s release day, and the film has landed in the middle of the Dussehra clash with Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2. This page pulls the film’s details into one place. Where sources disagree, I’ve said so instead of picking a number and hoping for the best.

(Not to be confused with Rangabali, the 2023 romantic action comedy with Naga Shaurya. Different film, similar spelling.)

Release Date and Languages

Mythri Movie Makers moved the release from 11 September to 16 October 2026, aiming for the Dussehra window. You can watch it in Telugu, Tamil, Hindi, Kannada or Malayalam. A heads-up on booking apps: some listings, like District, show only the Telugu version, so check the format and language for your city before you pay.

Reports say the makers decided against a ticket price hike in both Telugu states. That’s reported, not officially stated, so check the price at your theatre.

What is Ranabaali About?

The story is set in British-ruled South India between roughly 1854 and 1878. According to the trailer, the central events unfold in Singanamala, an imagined village in Rayalaseema, during the 1870s famine. A hero born into legend rises to defend his hungry, exploited people against the colonisers.

The trailer, released on 8 October, opens with Ranabaali’s birth on a hilltop beside a mystical cave. We then see him as a rebel who fights for justice for the townspeople, marries Jayamma, and ends up facing Sir Theodore Hector.

I’ve kept this spoiler-free. The interval and climax are being discussed in reviews, and I’ll leave them there.

Is Ranabaali a True Story?

Partly, and the makers are careful about it.

The teaser places the story against the devastating famine that struck Madras and parts of South India in 1876–78, a period when millions died and colonial relief policies fell short. That famine is documented history.

Ranabaali himself is not. Director Rahul Sankrityan calls it an alternate-history film, one that takes a slice of real history and reimagines how it could have played out, with Vijay playing a fictional saviour. Sources close to the film also say it isn’t a biopic or a textbook retelling, but a cinematic reconstruction built from accounts, oral histories and suppressed records.

So treat the famine, the colonial setting and the suffering as real, and the hero’s rebellion as invention. If a scene feels too neat to be true, it probably is.

Runtime, Certificate and Budget

Three basic facts, and sources disagree on all of them.

Detail What’s Reported Source
Runtime 2 hours 58 minutes Gulte’s review, District
Runtime 3 hours 5 minutes Fandango (US listing)
Runtime About 2 hours 50 minutes Vijay Deverakonda’s comments on the trimmed cut
Certificate U/A m9.news
Certificate UA16+ District listing
Budget About ₹120 crore Esquire India

For India, 2 hr 58 min looks like the figure to plan around, since it appears in an Indian review and on an Indian ticketing page. The 3 hr 5 min figure appears on US listings, which may reflect a different cut or just a different listing. The censor board’s certificate is the document that would settle it, and I haven’t seen it. I also couldn’t find an official budget from the makers, so treat ₹120 crore as a reported estimate.

One more detail: Rahul Sankrityan told Gulte he toned down the violence after preview audiences found the atrocity scenes too harsh. The trailer looks brutal, but the finished film may be less so.

Ranabaali Review: What Critics Are Saying

The early response is mixed, and it’s worth reading with that in mind: these are release-day reviews, and they’ll shift.

Outlet Rating The Gist
Gulte 2.5/5 Vijay gets the Kadapa slang right in most places, but his body language feels stiff in action scenes. The Vijay–Rashmika track is the highlight.
Telugu360 2.5/5 A strong story based on a forgotten Rayalaseema warrior is weakened by slow narration, a long runtime and limited commercial elements.
Oneindia Telugu 3/5 Praises the performances of Vijay Deverakonda and Rashmika Mandanna.
Venky Reviews (on X) 2/5 Appreciates the production design and Vijay’s performance but finds the screenplay slow and flat.

Social media is just as split. Some viewers praise Vijay’s intensity and screen presence, while others call the second half tiresome.

If you want one line: the performances and the Rayalaseema setting draw most of the praise, and pacing draws most of the complaints. For me, the real test will be the audience scores over the first weekend, not the first-show posts.

Ranabaali Box Office

No official first-day figure for India was available at the time of writing. I’ll add it here once it’s reported.

What we do have is the overseas advance picture. As of 13 October, the USA premiere advance stood at $70,767 from 4,047 tickets across 312 shows, according to Venky Box Office. Reports say the film needs about $3 million overseas to break even, including $2.2 million from North America.

The clash matters here. Jailer 2 arrived in cinemas on 15 October, a day earlier, and has been drawing strong advance demand. Its Telugu version was also ahead of Ranabaali in North American advance sales a few days before release. Screens and show timings in markets where Tamil and Telugu films share exhibitors will decide a lot of the early numbers.

Songs and Music

Ajay-Atul composed the music. The first song arrived early. On 28 February, the makers released a glimpse of the wedding song to mark Vijay and Rashmika’s marriage. It exists in every language version: Endhayya Saami (Telugu), Yedhayya Saami (Tamil), Enayya Saami (Kannada), Enthe Kannaala (Malayalam) and O Mere Saajan (Hindi).

  • Telugu version: sung by Shweta Mohan and Ajay Gogavale, with lyrics by Ramajogayya Sastry.
  • Hindi version (O Mere Saajan): sung by Javed Ali and Shweta Mohan, with lyrics by Kshitij Patwardhan.
  • Kobali: a fierce devotional-style track built around Ranabaali’s rage, with vocals by V.M. Mahalingam and lyrics by Kesavaditya.

Reaction to the music is not unanimous. One viewer called Ajay-Atul’s music a big letdown in a post-show X review. A fair summary is that the songs have been popular, but the background score has split opinion.

Where to Watch Ranabaali Online (OTT)

For now, only in theatres. No OTT date has been announced. JustWatch’s US page also shows no streaming release date yet.

You may see an estimate floating around. Movie Insider’s US page estimates a digital release in November 2026, but says plainly that it isn’t confirmed. Indian OTT deals usually carry their own windows, so wait for the platform’s announcement. I’ll update this section when one comes.
