The Met Gala happened last night (May 4th, 2026), and honestly, if the theme “Costume Art” was meant to be a challenge, the Indian contingent basically turned the red carpet into their own personal gallery. It wasn’t just about wearing a stunning dress; it felt like every single person was carrying a piece of a museum on their back.
If you’ve been scrolling through X or Instagram today, you’ve probably seen the absolute madness. We aren’t just talking about “fashion” anymore—this event was more like a takeover. Here’s the lowdown on who actually stole the show.
The $15 Million Statement

Let’s start with the one that probably had more security than the actual museum. Sudha Reddy turned out in a custom Manish Malhotra ensemble dubbed “The Tree of Life,” but the clothes didn’t draw attention.
Sure, the royal blue number did take 3,459 hours to create, which is beyond excessive but she was wearing a massive pendant—a whopping 550 carats’ worth of tanzanite. Its name is the “Queen of Merelani,” and it’s estimated to be worth about $15 million. We’re pretty sure just looking at it through a screen makes one feel poor.
Karan’s Full-Circle Moment

Look, Karan Johar finally turned up to the Met, and he clearly didn’t get the memo about “less is more.” Thank God for that. After decades of basically being Bollywood’s self-appointed fashion czar, his debut had to be a statement, and he didn’t disappoint. He ditched the standard black-tie suit for something much more striking—a massive, six-foot cape that was basically a walking tribute to Raja Ravi Varma.
Manish Malhotra dubbed the look “Framed in Eternity,” and it lived up to the name. The whole thing was hand-painted with scenes straight out of Varma’s 19th-century canvases—you could see the swans, the lotuses, and those iconic architectural pillars. It even pulled specific imagery from classics like Lady with the Peach. It felt very “Karan”—dramatic, unapologetically cinematic, and just a bit theatrical.
To give you an idea of the sheer madness of the craftsmanship, it took eighty artisans about 85 days to get this one jacket ready. That’s over 5,600 hours of manual labour just for one red carpet walk. Underneath all that art, he wore a black velvet bandhgala with some heavy zardozi work, styled by Eka Lakhani.

The Ambani Standard
At the Met Gala 2026, Isha Ambani turns the global spotlight toward Indian craftsmanship, proving the saree is more than fashion — it’s wearable art. #navbharatjournal #metgala2026 #metgalaredcarpet #ishaambani #metgalafashion pic.twitter.com/hNtBV7I4VO

Isha Ambani is a Met regular at this point, but she really pushed it this year. She wore a Gaurav Gupta saree woven with real gold threads, but the blouse was the real kicker—it was encrusted with 1,800 carats of diamonds from her mother Nita Ambani’s personal collection.
She was also carrying a gold mango-shaped clutch by artist Subodh Gupta. It’s such a specific, quirky Indian detail, isn’t it? A diamond-encrusted mango. Only an Ambani.
The Sculptures and the Mask

Natasha Poonawalla did what she always does: she wore something that barely looks like clothes. It was a Marc Quinn sculpture that looked like a giant white orchid blooming around her.
Meanwhile, Ananya Birla made her debut in a Robert Wun look with a full metallic face mask, also by Subodh Gupta. She looked like a high-fashion cyborg, but it was apparently a comment on “hiding identity.” Very edgy for a first-timer.

The Meaningful Cape

One of our favourite moments was Manish Malhotra himself. He wore a black bandhgala with a cape that featured the Mumbai skyline, but the best part? It was embroidered with the actual signatures of every tailor and artisan who worked on it.
In a world of “quiet luxury,” that was a pretty loud way to give credit to the people who actually do the work.

The Traditionalists

We also saw Diya Mehta Jatia (Shloka Mehta’s sister) wearing a Mayyur Girotra outfit that used “shola” work—that white spongey wood they use for religious idols in Bengal. And then there were the Jaipur royals, Maharaja Sawai Padmanabh Singh and Princess Gauravi Kumari, looking effortless in Prabal Gurung. Pacho had a literal mirror on his back, a nod to the Sheesh Mahal.
Honestly, by the time the sun came up, it felt like the Indian squad had basically won the Met. It wasn’t just about looking pretty; it was about the karigars, the history, and a casual $15 million rock. Not bad for a Monday night.
