Commercial LPG Rates Jump ₹993 Amid Global Crisis

NEW DELHI – If you’re running a restaurant or a catering business in India, 1 May 2026 is a date that will sting the bottom line. State-owned oil marketing companies (OMCs) have just dropped a massive price hike on 19-kg commercial LPG cylinders, raising the cost by a staggering ₹993 per bottle.

This isn’t just a minor market fluctuation; it’s the third and most brutal increase since the Middle East conflict ignited on 28 February 2026. While the government has kept domestic household rates frozen to prevent a total public outcry, the commercial sector is now bearing the full weight of a global energy crisis.

The New Price Reality: City by City

The price jump has pushed the cost of doing business to record highs across the metro cities. In the national capital, Delhi, a 19-kg cylinder now costs ₹3,071.50, up from the previous rate of ₹2,078.50. Mumbai followed suit with a new rate of ₹3,024, while Kolkata hit ₹3,190. In Chennai, the price has soared to ₹3,237.

Anyway, the reason for this spike isn’t exactly a mystery. Crude oil prices have smashed through the $120 per barrel mark. With the Iran-US war disrupting critical shipping lanes in the Persian Gulf, the cost of importing fuel has become astronomical. Reports from NDTV suggest that OMCs are facing daily losses of roughly ₹16,000 crore. Passing this burden onto hotels and industries was the only lever left to pull.

Mandatory OTPs and New Delivery Rules

It’s not just the price that changed on 1 May. The government has overhauled the delivery process to stop hoarding and black marketing. You can no longer just hand over cash and take a cylinder.

  • Delivery Authentication Code (DAC): Every delivery now requires a unique OTP sent to the customer’s registered mobile number. No OTP, no gas.
  • Booking Windows: Urban users are now restricted to a 25-day interval between bookings, while rural areas have a 45-day limit.
  • eKYC Requirements: For those under the Ujjwala scheme, biometric verification is now mandatory to keep the subsidy flowing.

According to Business Standard, these measures are a direct response to the “wartime” energy footing India currently finds itself on. The goal is to ensure that the limited supply reaches actual businesses rather than being diverted.

The Ripple Effect on Your Plate

Now, here is the thing that every consumer needs to know. While your household cylinder still sits at ₹913 in Delhi, you’re still going to pay for this hike. Restaurants, bakeries, and street food vendors cannot absorb a ₹993 jump without changing their menus. Most eatery owners are already discussing a “war surcharge” or simply raising the price of a standard meal by 10-15%.

The crazy part is that petrol and diesel prices haven’t budged yet. The government is holding that line with everything they’ve got to prevent a total transport collapse. But with international aviation fuel also getting a nudge up, the pressure is building everywhere.
