Two young women. Two families were destroyed. And once again, allegations of dowry harassment have pushed the country into asking the same painful question: Are women safe inside their marital homes? In just a couple of days, Twisha Sharma and Deepika Nagar lost their lives at different places but for the same reason: alleged abuse by their in-laws. The former one committed suicide in Bhopal, and the latter one in Greater Noida. In both cases, the families claim their daughters were harassed, pressured, and mentally broken over dowry demands.
Twisha Sharma’s Last Messages Are Now Haunting Her Family
Twisha Sharma, a 33-year-old MBA graduate and former Miss Pune contestant, was found dead at her husband Samarth Singh’s home in Bhopal’s Katara Hills area on May 12. She married Samarth, who is a lawyer, just five months ago. She met him on a dating app for the first time in 2024. According to Firstpost, before her death, she sent some alarming messages to her close friend. “Shaadi ki khujli mein shaadi mat karna.
Soch samaj kar aage badhna,” she wrote in one chat, warning her friend not to rush into marriage. In another message, she said, “I am trapped, bro. Bas tu mat phasna.” Her family says this is not normal. They believe Twisha must have been suffering it silently for months.
According to her brother, Major Harshit Sharma, Twisha was being harassed by her husband and in-laws. The family has alleged that she was threatened to abort her pregnancy if she didn’t arrange the Rs 20 lakh for her marital family. Her mother claims Twisha called her on the night of the incident and told her about the abuse. But she cut the call quickly when her husband entered the room. Hours later, the family got another call. This time, they were informed that Twisha was “not breathing.” The postmortem report confirmed that the cause of death was hanging.
However, it also disclosed that there were multiple injuries on her body. Twisha’s parents later protested outside Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav’s residence in Bhopal for justice and a fair investigation of the incident. The family has also accused local police, as they were not filing the FIR, and they were literally saving the accused. OneIndia confirms that SIT has now been appointed to investigate the allegations against Samarth Singh and his mother, retired judge Giribala Singh.
A video has been released by Gyanmatinews on their Instagram handle in which Twisha Sharma is seen going upstairs, and later on, her husband and a few other men are carrying her down. This video has given a new angle to the case.
Deepika Nagar’s Family Says ‘This Was Not Suicide’
Another case from Greater Noida surfaced. According to The Times of India, Deepika Nagar, a woman in her early 20s, died after allegedly jumping from the terrace of her house in the Ecotech-III area on Sunday night. She had been married to Hrithik Tanwar for around one and a half years. But Deepika’s family strongly believes she did not die by suicide. Her father, Sanjay Narang, alleged that Deepika was physically and mentally tortured for dowry soon after her marriage. According to him, the family demanded a Fortuner SUV and Rs 51 lakh in cash.
“Unhe Fortuner gaadi chahiye thi, 51 lakh rupaye chaiye the,” he told reporters while sitting outside the mortuary. The grieving father said the family kept trying to save the marriage and avoided going to the police, hoping things would improve with time. On Sunday, Deepika called her family and said she was being assaulted again. Her father and relatives even visited her in-laws’ home to calm the situation. But shortly after they returned home, they got a call saying Deepika had fallen from the roof.
“They killed her. After beating her, they threw her down from the roof,” her father alleged, rejecting claims that it was suicide. According to reports, injury marks were found on Deepika’s body. Times Now reported that the postmortem report showed internal bleeding and serious injuries before death. Police have arrested Deepika’s husband, Hrithik Tanwar, and father-in-law, Manoj. An FIR has reportedly been filed against seven members of the family.

Two Cases, One Painful Reality
The deaths of Twisha Sharma and Deepika Nagar have once again brought attention to the dark reality of dowry-related abuse in India. Both families say their daughters spoke about emotional torture, pressure, and violence after marriage. Both families also say they kept hoping things would get better. Now, they are left demanding justice.
